Strange but true …..We have just watched Wild China and a visit to Turpan was included (along with desert scenes you described). The underground irrigation canals were amazing. They also showed the large concrete structures you described with holes all the way used for making raisins. Hamsters were shown invading these ‘houses’ for a grand feast. Fortunately it was not 100 degrees here! Keep cool. D+P xx
